The Zoomie Rugby Invitational 7s Tournament is the continuation of a long line of 7s Rugby along the Eastern Rockies beginning in the spring of 1968. Although the organization's name and growth of the sport have changed the landscape slightly, the foundation of 7s Tournaments really remains as it was over 40 years ago.
During the early years, all of the teams competed in the same tournament – men’s town teams and collegiate programs. Eventually, the colleges separated into their own division, and, with the evolution of USA Rugby in 2011, the current format of college rugby 7s at the national level began to take shape.
APRIL 11, 2026 | UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY
The Zoomie Rugby Invitational 7s Tournament, hosted by the Academy, is a part of the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) D1A Tournaments that will provide players with experience for the College 7s Championships coming up later in April and May. Teams from the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) and National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) are competing in the tournament. Ruggers all along the Rockies - from Montana to New Mexico and from Colorado to Utah – have met on and off the pitch, to build relationships and advance the sport along the front range and beyond. We wish all competitors good luck in the tournament! Let’s all remember World Rugby's core values: integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, and respect. These are important character-building traits learned in rugby that will last the players a lifetime.
The mission of Air Force Academy Rugby is to develop exceptional leaders honed by the program’s uniquely competitive and demanding environment. The program’s warrior ethos prepares graduates for any challenge they may face on the battlefield, in business negotiations, or in the face of life’s stresses. The top ranks of Air Force officers have been well represented by rugby alumni.
A brief history of USAFA Rugby: It began as an intramural sport when the founding class started in 1955. In 1961, we started playing visiting overseas teams, and we officially became a club team in 1968. In our first matches, the A team ("All Blues") beat the Denver Highlanders, 29-0, and the B side ("Silver side") fought the Denver University A team to a 16-16 tie. Duly impressed by our fit and fast players, the Eastern Rockies Rugby Union called us "Zoomies". Their nickname replaced "All Blues" in 1969 and is still in use.
Zoomie Men's Rugby has a proud record of success at the collegiate level. This includes three national championships (2003, 1990,1989), five National Championship Runner Up (1995, 1993, 1987, 1983, and 1980), numerous National Championship Final Four appearances, and many successes at the 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) and CRAA D1A R7CCs Tournaments.
Men’s Blue (A) is a USA Rugby D1A team competing in the Rocky Mountain Conference.
